Reconstruction After Cancer

Cancer surgery can sometimes result in significant tissue loss or changes to the body’s appearance and function.

Microsurgical reconstruction can use tissue from another part of the body to reconstruct areas affected by cancer surgery, helping restore both function and appearance.

Our specialist expertise includes reconstruction following:

Reconstruction After Trauma

Severe injuries can damage skin, muscle, bone and other soft tissues, sometimes leaving wounds that cannot be closed using conventional techniques.

Microsurgery allows tissue from another part of the body to be transferred to the injured area while reconnecting tiny blood vessels under a microscope.

FAQs

Common Questions

We understand that choosing skin surgery is a personal decision, and it’s normal to have questions about the procedure, recovery, and what happens next. Below, we’ve addressed the most common queries from patients to help you feel confident and informed.

Reconstructive microsurgery uses specialised techniques to transfer tissue from one part of the body to another while reconnecting very small blood vessels under magnification.

Microsurgery may be considered for patients with complex tissue defects following cancer surgery, traumatic injury, infection or previous operations. Suitability depends on each patient’s individual circumstances.

A free flap involves transferring tissue from one area of the body to another and reconnecting its blood vessels at the recipient site using microsurgical techniques.

This depends on your circumstances and whether you are being treated through the NHS, private healthcare or private self-pay. Our team can advise you about the appropriate route to consultation.

Complex reconstruction may involve collaboration with other surgical and medical specialists. Your treatment plan will be discussed with you and coordinated where necessary.
